Study: FDG-PET/CT better than CT in finding anal carcinoma

A study of patients with anal carcinoma showed that FDG-PET/CT found primary tumors in 97% of cases during pretreatment staging while using CT alone found the tumors in 56% of cases. "Accurate staging is crucial to appropriate management of anal carcinoma, and FDG-PET scans should be obtained in all patients prior to initiation of definitive chemoradiation," the lead author said.
