New York's Department of Environmental Conservation is gathering comments on hydraulic fracturing through Dec. 12, but the final hearings are being held this week. "In North Dakota they're drilling, and they've gone from high unemployment to the lowest unemployment rate in the country. And they drink their water," a landowners association member said during Tuesday's meeting. "With more than 1 million wells safely hydraulically fractured in the United States, the nation's oil and natural gas industry has a stellar record of safety," said Independent Oil and Gas Association of New York Executive Director Brad Gill.
