Weak economy and reduced federal funding hit U.S. states hard

U.S. states are forced to make increasingly painful choices as high unemployment persists, a weak recovery generates little tax revenue and federal assistance ends, according to a report. Medicaid spending is increasing much faster than tax collection, according to the National Governors Association and the National Association of State Budget Officers.
