Find creative alternatives to layoffs

Asking employees to accept sacrifices rather than be laid off because of the economy could actually build morale, even though the general consensus of managers today holds that they would lose their best people if they cut salaries, says Peter Cappelli, director of the Wharton Center for Human Resources. If the economic crisis continues, the idea that the best employees will leave is not an issue, says Cappelli, because no one will be hiring.
