Districts face high transportation costs for students with disabilities

Some Pennsylvania school districts say it is expensive to transport students with disabilities to special-education facilities out of district and, in many cases, well beyond the usual boundaries of school transportation. One official said transporting a single student is costing her district $46,200 a year. While officials say they try to partner with neighboring districts to share transportation and associated costs, such arrangements often mean much longer rides for students.
