New schedules help Atlanta students with transition to middle school

A pilot program in four Atlanta middle schools is helping sixth-grade students make an easier transition to middle school -- switching them to "block" schedules, increasing the amount of time they spend on each subject and reducing the number of teachers they report to each day. "In middle school, a lot of the onus is on the student," one teacher said. "They become responsible for their own work. Sometimes that can be overwhelming for them."
