EIA: Shale drilling boosted 2009 proved gas reserves by 11%

Proved natural gas reserves rose 11% last year to 284 trillion cubic feet, the most since 1971, because of the development of shale plays, according to a report from the Energy Information Administration. The increase happened "despite a 32% decline in the natural gas wellhead prices used to assess economic viability for 2009 reserves as compared to the prices used in reserves reporting for 2008," the report added.
