Lola Gonzalez, the owner of Accurate Background Check, says she was crunching the business' numbers in March when she came to a sobering realization. She called her staff together to make the announcement: "I want you all to know I have to lay somebody off and it's been a very difficult decision. And that person is me." By cutting her own six-figure salary, Gonzalez was able to keep her nine workers employed; she took a full-time job as a social worker. As business slowly improves, she checks in by phone twice a day and still does some background checks off the clock, but she says her return to the company is probably a ways away.
