Background noise can be a particular problem for those over 50 trying to hear, for instance, a waiter in a restaurant recite menu selections, writes this columnist. This is a result of normal, age-related structural damage within the ear. The good news, however, is that boomers -- long warned about the dangers of listening to loud music -- have better hearing at their age than their parents had, perhaps due to healthier living.
