Companies use wellness plans to prevent future health costs

Companies can ask or even require employees to participate in wellness programs as a way to maintain health insurance benefits but they cannot force them to achieve a set goal, such as losing 40 pounds, says John Murray, CEO of insurance broker Rose & Kiernan. Wellness programs can help prevent chronic diseases, and Murray says companies that eliminate future high-cost claims may come close to freezing health costs.
