Canadian election threatens marriage rights

Canada's Conservative Party leader, Stephen Harper, announced he will propose a repeal of legislation granting marriage rights to same-sex couples if he becomes prime minister after elections scheduled for Jan. 23, 2006. The government of Prime Minister Paul Martin, who was a strong advocate of the marriage law, suffered a vote of no confidence earlier this week.
