Deep discounts draw holiday shoppers

The holiday season got off to a busy start, with shoppers spending $41 billion over Thanksgiving weekend, with the average shopper plunking down about $372 -- up 7.2% from the per-shopper amount in 2007. However, the depth of the Black Friday discounts were such that many analysts do not expect the improved store traffic and spending to result in an uptick in sales for the entire holiday season.
