Demand remains high for special-needs teachers, says educator

Even though Iowa has a surplus of teachers, there is a high demand for special educators, says Susan Kalsow, the dean of the education school at Iowa's Buena Vista University. Kalsow says she is encouraging would-be teachers to focus on subject areas related to students with special needs. While it may cost them more money and time to add or change specialties while in school, it will significantly improve their chances of getting a job after graduation, she said.
