New Orleans gets $280M for public transit; Congress mulls transport bill

New Orleans will receive a $280 million injection of federal dollars for streetcars and other public transportation projects, the latest effort by the government to fund public works in the face of double-digit unemployment. There is about $500 billion in "pent-up demand" nationwide for infrastructure work, said Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood. A six-year surface transportation bill stalled in the House would fund that amount.
