New Orleans gets $280M for public transit; Congress mulls transport bill

New Orleans will receive a $280 million injection of federal dollars for street cars and other public transportation projects -- the latest effort by the federal government to fund public works in the face of double-digit unemployment. There is about $500 billion in "pent-up demand" around the nation for infrastructure work, according to Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood. A six-year surface transportation bill stalled in the House of Representatives would fund exactly that amount.
