United-ANA alliance could be delayed by Delta-JAL deal

A win by Delta Air Lines in its fervent courtship of Japan Airlines could torpedo efforts by United Airlines and ANA to secure antitrust immunity for a trans-Pacific partnership. "We have worked to convince both of our governments that this is the way to move forward, and we want to make sure we don't get stuck in a delay," says Mark Schwab, United's senior vice president for alliances and international affairs. That delay could materialize if JAL leaves its partnership with American Airlines and the Oneworld alliance, upsetting the equal balance among all three alliances in air traffic between the U.S. and Japan.
