Social media can help runners stay on track

A number of social-media offerings let joggers share details of their runs with their friends -- and get real-time feedback to cheer them on their way. GPS-powered applications such as RunKeeper and Nike+ let users automatically update their Facebook status as they start their run or reach certain goals. When friends post messages of encouragement, the apps "read" the comments over the jogger's headphones, hopefully helping them to stay motivated.
