Kroger, Wal-Mart open smaller, convenience-store outlets

Grocery store chains like Kroger and Wal-Mart are opening smaller convenience-store outlets that sell fresh produce, meat and dairy as well as more familiar frozen and packaged foods. Kroger has opened three Turkey Hill Markets in the Columbus, Ohio, area, and Wal-Mart is building Neighborhood Markets and Walmart Express convenience stores. "Competition is heating up as convenience stores are pitted against other channels, particularly dollar and drug channels,” according to consumer-goods consulting firm Information Resources.
