NRF: Holiday weekend spending dipped despite deals

U.S. retail spending during the four-day Black Friday weekend dipped nearly 3%, the first sales decline during the first official holiday shopping weekend in at least seven years, according to NRF data released Sunday. Retailers pulled out all the stops leading up to the holiday weekend, with many opening earlier on Thanksgiving and promoting deep discounts all weekend long, but consumers spent 3.9% less per person, NRF reported. "The truth is, for far too many Americans, things aren't great," NRF President and CEO Matthew Shay said.
