Commercial real estate is in tough times that might get worse -- yet real estate investment trusts that invest in commercial properties are doing well as a group. Liquidity is what gives REITs an advantage in a troubled sector, said John Wenker, who manages the real estate department for First American Funds Advisors. "REITs have rallied this year off the theme of access to capital," he said. "The fundamental environment for commercial real estate is still fairly weak, but public companies with access to capital should do well."
