Senate committee mulls alternatives to cap-and-trade proposal

The Senate's Energy and Natural Resources Committee took a break from tackling the cap-and-trade concept to explore other policy options, including a carbon tax or even industry-specific cuts on power plant emissions. People now view the cap-and-trade plan as a measure that would increase the prices of basic commodities, said Sen. Lisa Murkowski, R-Alaska. This should prompt lawmakers to seek cheaper carbon-reduction alternatives, she added.
