Dog bites are a major cause of hospitalizations in the U.S.

Data from the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality indicated that an average of 26 Americans were hospitalized daily for dog bites in 2008, and about 43% of dog bite patients needed treatment for skin and tissue infection. The agency also found that children and the elderly were most prone to being hospitalized for a dog bite.
