Industry group touts benefits of shale gas to Pennsylvania

Shale natural gas drilling technologies such as horizontal drilling and hydraulic fracturing present many opportunities for Pennsylvania and the region, said David Spigelmyer of the Marcellus Shale Coalition. The state gets about 75% of the gas it consumes from the Gulf of Mexico and Canada, but "having gas under our feet in Western Pennsylvania will change that dynamic significantly," Spigelmyer said. Gas is also capable of significantly reducing carbon emissions while having greater efficiency than coal, he added.
