Ex-NRC chairman assesses nuclear energy's prospects in U.S.

Former Nuclear Regulatory Commission Chairman Richard Meserve said he doesn't think there will be any new reactor projects for the rest of the decade, mainly because of low natural gas prices. However, that could be offset by increased measures to curb U.S. greenhouse gas emissions, as well as through the development of small modular reactors, he said at an energy policy forum in Washington, D.C. Meserve said SMRs could one day be an attractive option if more time and investments are put into their development.
