Missing bolts could account for collapse of Japanese tunnel

An estimated 270 concrete slabs suspended from the roof of Japan's Sasago Tunnel fell on Sunday, crushing cars and killing nine people. The cause of the failure could be missing or deteriorated anchor bolts used to secure the slabs, according to the executive officer of the tunnel's operator. The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism has ordered emergency inspections of dozens of other tunnels that have a ceiling structure similar to Sasago's.
