Human case of H7N9 in Hong Kong suggests virus is spreading

A woman in Hong Kong contracted H7N9 avian influenza and is in critical condition, according to Chinese health officials. The woman recently visited the nearby mainland city of Shenzhen and reportedly bought a live chicken there. "Respiratory viruses do their own thing; they don't respect boundaries," said virologist Ian Mackay of the University of Queensland in Australia. "It does [seem] that it's continuing to add to provinces and regions, rather than reappear in all the old places it started in back in February and March."
