Pet food industry comes under increased scrutiny

Pet food regulation has changed a lot since the industry first came to the U.S. in the 1890s. In 2007, more than 8,500 dogs and cats died from consuming contaminated pet food in the U.S. A study examining the same period showed that exposure to contaminated pet food also sickened humans. This led to pet food being included in the Food Safety Modernization Act of 2010, which means the Food and Drug Administration will regulate pet food for the first time.
