American pledges $1.1B investment in JAL, Delta hints at counter offer

American Airlines upped the stakes Thursday in its battle to woo Japan Airlines, offering a support package, including a $1.1 billion investment. Combined with a proposed trans-Pacific joint venture, American claimed its package was worth $1.8 billion, compared to the $1 billion being offered by Delta Air Lines. Delta President Ed Bastian said his airline might sweeten its offer, though he refused to provide details.
