Consumer group petitions FDA to ban obesity drug Meridia

Consumer group Public Citizen urged the FDA to pull Abbott Laboratories' Meridia from the market in light of a study linking the obesity drug to a heightened risk of heart attack, stroke and death. Abbott clarified that Meridia is not promoted for patients with a history of cardiovascular disease and "is not recommended or approved for use in more than 90% of the patients" in the study cited by Public Citizen.
