Marriage losses aside, couples are gaining legal protections

Although the marriage movement has suffered notable losses this year in Maine and now New York, much progress on recognizing the rights of LGBT couples has been made since 2000, as this article notes. Then, only two states legally recognized gay and lesbian couples; now 16 do. "We're more at the end than the beginning of the movement toward equality, and that's what you're seeing," said Rick Jacobs, founder and chairman of the Courage Campaign.
