A group of graphic design students at Portland State University in Oregon spend every Wednesday mentoring and teaching art to a group of 25 Centennial Learning Center high-school students with autism or behavioral challenges. In the class, called a "Friendtorship, the college students teach vocabulary and techniques that might appear on state standardized tests, while guiding students in projects, such as making a flag about themselves. "If we bring a lot of kids in, think about what that would do for getting kids to go to college. Art is an easy access point for kids. But what about science and math?" said PSU professor Liz Charman, who helped start the class three years ago.
