Budget negotiators miss deadline, but say a deal's within reach

Congressional budget negotiators missed a key deadline this week, making it less likely that they will secure a lasting deal before mid-January. Still, those involved in the talks said progress was being made, with Rep. Paul Ryan, R-Wis., and Sen. Patty Murray, D-Wash., reportedly closing in on a small-scale deal that would fix spending levels and put further budget clashes on hold for a period of two years.
