Column: Accurate metrics show a healthy travel agent population

A recent article on CNN.com presented a decline in the number of travel agents in the industry based on the number of agency locations registered with the Airlines Reporting Corp. However, this metric fails to show an accurate picture of the travel agent population, as many agents have either long abandoned the practice of selling air tickets or are using the ARC accreditation of their host agency to sell air travel, Kate Rice writes. While no single metric can give an accurate headcount of agents, metrics such as agent numbers under the Bureau of Labor Statistics and VAX VacationAccess registrations show a strong number of travel agents still active.
