Disparities in post-acute care persist; feds work to stabilize costs

Medicare beneficiaries in Connecticut were more than twice as likely as those in Arizona to use nursing home services, while average per-patient spending on home health care in Louisiana was $5,000 higher than in New Jersey, data show. In an effort to stabilize the cost of post-acute care, Medicare has turned to new payment approaches involving lump-sum payments designed to foster greater efficiency.
