Group proposes legislation to address privacy of student data

The American Legislative Exchange Council has released model legislation that would require school boards to select a "chief privacy officer" who would ensure the privacy of student data, an area of increasing concern among lawmakers. Other aspects of the proposed legislation would require boards to release an inventory of all student data being collected by the state, comply with federal privacy laws and include student-data privacy provisions in some contracts.
