Pa. colleges facing layoffs, academic cuts as budgets dwindle

The Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education is considering cutting academic programs and laying off faculty and staff at its 14 colleges and universities. Faced with budget shortfalls and declining enrollment, the school system could furlough 45 tenure and tenure-track professors as employment costs continue to rise. The system is asking the legislature to increase its base budget by 4% next year and provide an extra, one-time funding increase of $18 million.
