Study traces link between type 2 diabetes and dementia

Researchers found that high levels of insulin associated with type 2 diabetes affect the brain, disturbing functions of important central nervous system chemicals and leading to the formation of brain-damaging proteins. Excessive insulin produced in patients with type 2 diabetes enters the brain and overwhelms the same enzyme that stabilizes the hormone and breaks down amyloid, resulting in the formation of protein clumps that kill brain cells, according to research presented at the Society for Neuroscience meeting.
