Toronto to host "Pride House" during Sochi Olympics

12/3/2013 | (Canada)

The city of Toronto will host an LGBT Pride House, a safe space and resource center for LGBT athletes and advocates, after Russian officials denied an application to host a similar center in Sochi during the 2014 Winter Olympics. The decision breaks with tradition; both the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver and the 2012 Summer Olympics in London featured Pride Houses. "We hope to use [the Toronto Pride House] as an opportunity to raise awareness for LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender) peoples human rights in Russia, to celebrate the Russian community, and the LGBT community in Russia in ways that we don't see happening now," said Barbara Besharat of PrideHouse Toronto.
