Audit: Few teachers pursue California training program

Only 7,230 of California's 252,000 public school math and reading teachers over the past five years have completed a voluntary 120-hour training program designed to improve instruction and boost student performance, a state audit report found. The state administrator for the Mathematics and Reading Development Program initiative says larger numbers of educators have completed either all or a good part of the training and points out officials have spent nearly all the money they were given to promote the program.
