Homelessness among students in western Mich. rises for fifth year in a row

More than 8,000 school-age children in western Michigan are homeless, according to the most recent statewide data, and the homelessness rate has been growing for the past five years. "We get calls every day of people we put into the homeless system," said Tammy Dillon, Grand Rapids Public Schools' liaison for the homeless. Homelessness, officials say, is almost certainly under-reported because of shame among families and difficulty tracking runaways.
