Contract signed for $2.1B of tunnel, road work in Virginia

The Virginia Department of Transportation has awarded a $2.1 billion contract to build a new tunnel between Norfolk and Portsmouth, rehabilitate two other tunnels and extend the Martin Luther King Freeway. "This is a significant milestone for a project that has been on the books for some time and is long overdue," said Virginia Transportation Secretary Sean Connaughton. The Elizabeth River Crossings consortium, a group of private companies, won the contract and has funding lined up. Work will begin next year.
