Red panda dies at zoo after gastric torsion surgery

An otherwise healthy, five-year-old red panda died after undergoing surgery for gastric torsion at Michigan's Potter Park Zoo, according to zoo veterinarian Tara Harrison. "This is common among dogs and other deep-chested animals," said Dr. Harrison. "It is thought to be uncommon in red pandas, though research on the species is fairly new so this is a unique case."
