Boxed beverages see surge in sustainability

Boxed beverages have been around since the mid-1960s, and the cardboard has traditionally been lined with aluminum or plastic, which made drink boxes nearly impossible to recycle. But a growing number of manufacturers are turning to bag-in-box applications where the outer carton is fully recyclable, leaving only the plastic pouch. The format is most widely used by wine brands, but Michigan-based sustainable water company Boxed Water is Better has also adopted the sustainable packaging.
