Study: Gastric banding boosts outcomes in overweight diabetes patients

Gastric banding was associated with greater weight loss and remission of diabetes compared with standard medical care in type 2 diabetes patients who were overweight but not obese, researchers reported at the World Diabetes Congress. Researchers also found that patients in the gastric-banding arm required less medication and showed better physical quality-of-life measures than did those in the medical-care group. The results suggest that a lower BMI threshold could be considered for the procedure.
