Merck is first to seek approval of cervical cancer vaccine

Merck has filed for FDA approval of its vaccine Gardasil, taking the lead in the race to market a vaccine against cervical cancer. GlaxoSmithKline plans to apply for European approval of its vaccine candidate Cervarix in the first half of 2006. Merck and Sanofi Pasteur MSD, which would market Gardasil in Europe, plan to file for approval there and in Australia before the end of 2005.
