AAR reports latest weekly carload, intermodal results

The volume of rail carloads originated by U.S. railroads dropped 2% in the week ending Dec. 1 year-on-year, and intermodal declined 1.1%, according to the Association of American Railroads. However, crude oil shipments climbed 65.3% in the latest week, and 14 of the 20 commodity types also posted gains, AAR noted. "Other commodity categories like autos, lumber, and crushed stone, sand, and gravel that are more highly correlated with economic growth have been growing, which we hope is a good sign for the economy moving forward," said John Gray, AAR senior vice president.
