Study considers whether to give IV fluids to patients near death

A recent study sheds some light on whether IV or subcutaneous fluids should be avoided at the end of life to prevent fluid buildup and if doing so leads to delirium, Dr. Eric Widera writes. Research in the Journal of Clinical Oncology found no significant differences between patients with IV hydration and without in terms of dehydration symptoms or overall delirium scores. The study included 129 patients with mild to moderate but not severe dehydration.
