IDC: Smartphone-makers will fight slower growth with more power

Smartphone manufacturers will face a mixed bag next year, according to IDC's predictions, which call for smartphone shipments to increase by 20% in 2014 compared with 39% this year. Carriers will fight back with phones featuring more powerful chips that will enable vendors to offer gaming technology that rivals consoles and improve screen resolution that could remove distortion from Web pages built for PCs. IDC also expects operators to adopt a technology called carrier aggregation that will boost data download speeds.
