Noninvasive techniques for early detection of portal hypertension

Spanish researchers found that basic diagnostic procedures can identify early portal hypertension in asymptomatic patients. Using ultrasound, platelet counts and evaluation of liver stiffness, scientists evaluated 250 patients with liver disease. "In patients with very high LS (above 25), cirrhosis and clinically significant portal hypertension are almost 100% certain," said Dr. Salvador Augustin from Hospital Universitari Vall d'Hebron in Spain.
