Project aims to model the human brain

As part of the 10-year Human Brain Project, researchers are developing the SpiNNaker Machine, a parallel computing system that will employ 1 million ARM-based processors. “The SpiNNaker machine will incorporate one million ARM processor cores, but the brain is incredibly complicated. We will only be able to get to 1% of the scale [of the brain] with one million chips,” says Steve Furber, a computer engineering professor at the University of Manchester who played a key role in developing the ARM microprocessor.
